Coon Rapids community scholarships were presented to 188 graduating seniors during Coon Rapids High School's senior recognition night.

A total of approximately $172,000 was awarded to students by local businesses, organizations and alumni of Coon Rapids High School.

Twenty percent of the total scholarship funds were donated by alumni, according to Bruce Frank, former president of the Coon Rapids Community Scholarship Association.

The presentation of scholarship recipients was made by Howard Helgen, president of community scholarship association.

Helgen was accompanied by Frank during the ceremony.

Coon Rapids community scholarships are awarded based on a points system. Each student who applies for a scholarship is evaluated according to his or her role in the school and in the community.

"Two-thirds of the criteria for the scholarships are based on academic achievement during the student's four years at CRHS," Frank said.

"The other one-third is based on activities within the community and the school."

Students are awarded points for any activities in which they have been involved during their high school career, including teams, organizations and volunteer work.

According to Frank, each students' points are then totaled. The amount of points the student possesses determines how much money he or she will be given, Frank said.

The minimum amount that each student received was $500.
