Wrestling: What's new? Coon Rapids and Anoka will battle for
the NWSC title again
|

![]() |
Regardless of what happens this week, the Northwest Suburban championship will go to the winner of next Thursday's (Feb. 3) dual meet between Anoka and Coon Rapids.
It worked out that way last season, too, when Coon Rapids beat Anoka in a down-to-the-wire thriller. This year the dual meet will be at Anoka in what is the regular-season finale for both teams.
Though it finished fifth last weekend in the Apple Valley tournament, Anoka has been coming on in recent weeks, winning the Monticello tournament, while maintaining a perfect conference record. A 38-28 win over Blaine Jan. 20 was one of its most recent against Northwest Suburban competition.
Coon Rapids has been coming on strong, too.
In fact, Coon Rapids has been slowly working a comeback road of sorts after serious knee and leg injuries took out returning state tournament place-finishers PJ Mack and Ryan Adams for large portions of the team's schedule.
Both senior wrestlers have healed and are now back in the middle of Coon Rapids' lineup at 130 and 135 pounds. So is the younger Ryan Adams, who missed a couple of mid-season meets because of another ailment.
In spite of wrestling with a jockeyed lineup, Coon Rapids was able to maintain a perfect record through the Northwest Suburban Conference schedule as well. The team defeated Park Center 47-15 Jan. 20 in one of its most recent conference outings and was scheduled to face Blaine this week.
Last weekend at the Eastview Lightning dual meet invitational, the full-strength Coon Rapids lineup ripped both the host school (Eastview) and Southwest. In between, however, Coon Rapids was nicked by seventh-ranked Bemidji 31-29 in a meet that slipped from its grasp.
Coon Rapids had a 29-15 lead at one point in the meet, but lost the final four matches and its opportunity to finish a perfect weekend.
Actually, two losses earlier in the meet dictated the heart-breaking outcome. A first-match loss at 103 by Mike Murphy, who had command of his match with Denver Colin - a 5-2 third-period lead only to be caught and turned - portended trouble. Though he was not pinned, Murphy lost by three points. Mack, who is trying to recapture the momentum that carried him to a second-place state tournament finish in 2004, also lost a tough match in this meet to the ranked Joe Anderson of Bemidji. Mack had command almost to the end but was caught and taken down at the buzzer to lose 7-6.
In other matches, Carter, Jason and Ryan Adams all collected falls at 112, 125 and 130, Matt Curtis took a 5-3 decision at 140, Phillip Morgan majored his foe 14-6 at 145 and Josh Carr earned another major at 160 - the final match won by a Coon Rapids.
While Coon Rapids was going 2-1 in the Eastview tournament, Anoka was wrestling a few miles away to its fourth-place finish at Apple Valley.
Anoka's showing was good, but not spectacular; it had no individual weight-class champions and just three second-place finishers in Paul Tellgren at 103, Lucas Murray at 135 and Dusty Iverson at 189.
Tellegren was defeated in his finale 4-1 by Tom Kelliher of Apple Valley, while Murray lost to Richard Fessler 19-6 in his championship match at 135. In Iverson's finale at 189, he lost 13-6 to a wrestler from Luxemburg Casco (a Wisconsin wrestling powerhouse).
In addition to those finishes, Jake Dietchler had a solid third place showing at 125, losing to a defending Wisconsin state champion, Eric Metzler of Luxemburg Casco, 5-3 in the semifinal round. Josh Tressler was another third-place finisher for Anoka at 142, while Andy Hildre at 119, C.B. Stratton at 160, Jarod Rasmussen at 215 and Jim Hill at heavyweight were all fifth-place finishers.
Prior to this tournament experience, Anoka pulled away from Blaine late in its conference dual meet Jan. 20.
Anoka trailed 22-17 lead going into the closing stages of this meet which began with the 119-pound weight class and closed it out with four wins in five chances. Back-to-back-to-back falls by Adam Armstrong at 189, Iverson, who was shoved up to 215 and Rasmussen at heaviweight made it 35-22. This set up 103-pound Paul Tellgren, whose 3-2 victory over Kyle Donlan in the second overtime period clinched it, 38-22 even though Blaine's Clint Daligdig won the final match at 112 pounds by fall...
Sundgren claimed a
title at Apple Valley
While the Blaine team finished sixth in the Apple Valley tournament last weekend with 116.5 points (just three behind fifth-place Anoka with 119.5), John sundgren came out of the weekend with an individual championship.
Sundgren, who was also one of Blaine's six victors during the dual meet with Anoka at 119 pound, claimed this weight-class title at Apple Valley by pinning Burnsville Gavin Dattilo in the championship match. Other top finishers for Blaine were Donlan, third at 103 pounds, Joey Pauluk, fifth at 135 pounds, Corey Duffy, second at 140 pounds, Matt Withrow, fourth at 145 pounds, Theo Gagner, fourth at 160 pounds, Travis Carlson, third at 171 pounds and Torrey Gavin, sixth at heavyweight...
The 20-0 St. Francis
string came to a halt
Totino Grace, then Bemidji brought the 20-0 season's start for St. Francis to a quick end last week and weekend.
In the battle for this year's North Suburban championship, Grace prevailed 29-24 in a dual meet Jan. 20. Two days later, Jan. 22, St. Francis was defeated in the first round of the Eastview Lightning dual meet tournament 37-22 by seventh-ranked Bemidji. the Saints came out of the weekend with back-to-back decisive tournament wins over Eastview and Southwest, but the winning streak was over.
"We had a lot of luck to go 20-0, but last week we ran out; we didn't have much luck at all when we needed it most," said coach Keith Lipinski.
In the North Suburban showdown with Grace, the Saints lost at a couple of key weights where they had anticipated winning. Illness was partly to blame in one circumstance as St. Francis did not have a one of its regular members in the starting lineup, but just plain old bad luck hurt in the other.
Bad luck, perhaps, struck an even broader blow before any of the matches were wrestled when St. Francis lost the coin flip. Consequently, when it got down to a pivotal point in the meet where Lipinski wanted to switch his lineup to get the most beneficial matchup, he had to declare first and Grace was able to counter.
The critical moment came before 189 pounds where St. Francis had to declare its intentions and as expected Grace put out the opponent Lipinski did not want his man to face at that moment. The end result were back-to-back defeats instead of a split of the 189- and 215-pound matches and a Grace pullaway to the victory.
"I won't mind the loss for the conference title now if we get a chance to face them (Grace) again in the state tournament," said the coach. "We know what we can do if there is a rematch."
The season's second straight loss - to Bemidji in the first round of the Eastview tournament - was somewhat unexpected.
Once again not-so-good luck intervened as St. Francis lost back-to-back matches by fall in the upper weights that were expected to be victories. An injury default followed at 215 as Charlie Carlson was slammed to the mat and could not continue. With victory out of reach, St. Francis forfeited the final match enabling Bemidji to close out the meet with 24 unanswered points, turning a 22-13 St. Francis lead into the 37-22 defeat.
Winning by decision for St. Francis in this dual meet were Trent Herold at 103, Nick Wasche at 119, Robbie Kriesel at 152 and Cole Swenson at 160 while Travis Kirpach at 112 and Chris Costellano at 145 won their matches by major decision and fall...
MC/RC was second
The Meadow Creek/Rivers Christian wrestling team took second in the Orono dual meet tournament last weekend with victories over Orono 60-15 and South St. Paul and a loss to Highland Park 38-24. Finishing the weekend undefeated were: Ross Cazett at 103, Andrew Attia at 140, Jesse Erickson at 145 and Tyler Benz at heavyweight...
Park staked its claim
for 4AAA's top spot
By falling 37-22 to non-conference foe White Bear Lake Jan. 25, Spring Lake Park missed out on earning the No. 1-seeded position for the Section 4AAA team tournament next month.
This dual meet with White Bear completed a whirlwind six-meet schedule over five days. On Jan. 20, Park dispatched Irondale 39-27 and Fridley 58-19 during a triangular meet it hosted. Two days later Park marched over to Mounds View for a dual meet tournament and swept the field - 34-33 over Mounds View, 49-28 over Cooper and 36-25 over Maple Grove.
Finishing the tournament undefeated were Mike Ryan at 112 pounds with two falls and a 12-5 decision and both Ramy Khalil at 125/119 and heavyweight Brian Knutson, who pinned each of their foes. Meantime, Josh Dahl picked up wins over his Mounds View and Cooper opponents at 125, Brent Basinski collected one major decision and a victory by technical fall over his Cooper and Maple Grove counterparts at 152 and Cullen Snyder at 215 had two very important falls over opponents in Park's meets with Mounds View and Maple Grove.
In the meet with Irondale, Basinski had the lone victory by fall, while Ryne Sladek earned a victory by technical fall at 135 and Knutson a forfeit win at 275. Two of the key victories that helped deliver the 39-27 win were picked up 1-0 by Jesse Borchardt (via a second-period escape) at 145 and by Ben Chandler at 171 by 6-5 decision.
Girls' hoops: PACT claimed the
Crusader tourney title
The PACT Charter school team claimed the Crusader Classic invitational tournament championship last weekend hosted by First Baptist in Rosemount with wins over Cambridge Christian, host First Baptist and Prairie Winds.
PACT opened with a 49-48 win over Cambridge Christian as eighth-grader Meghan Molitor scored a season-high 17 points, while Janelle Anderson contributed 12 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.

And in the finale against Prairie Winds, PACT won 44-38 behind Molitor's 16 poinds and 11 rebounds. Anderson, meantime recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Andover won in OT
Senior Mari Korton hit three of four foul shots, hit a critical field goal and blocked three shots during overtime to lift Andover to a 56-53 Northwest Suburban win Jan.25. Korton's late contributions were timely after she had been limited to only three points during regulation play.

Blaine was two games back
Blaine maintained a winning record, but it was a record that left it two games off the first-place pace in the Northwest Suburban Conference standings - 7 wins, 4 losses. Centennial led the league with just two losses in 11 games.

Spring Lake Park dropped a pair of games to its foes in Fridley - a North Suburba contest Jan. 21 to Totino Grace 44-30, then a non-conference game Jan. 25 to Fridley, 55-50. In the Friday night loss, which dropped Park to 2-6 in the conference standings, a two-point second quater and a five-point third quarter proved no good in keeping up with its foe. Despite this dearth of points, Amanda Hallberg was able to collect 11 to lead the team in scoring. In the Tuesday night loss to Fridley Hallberg scord 17, but Park was unable to recover from a 34-27 halftime deficit...

Boys' hoops: Andover moved into tie for third
With a 69-56 victory over Centennial Jan. 25, the Andover boys' team moved into a third-place tie in the Northwest Suburban standings, two games behind teh co-leaders Champlin Park and Maple Grove.
The victory gave Andover a record of 6-3 in the conference, which both Centennial and Blaine owned going into Northwest Suburban games later in the week.
In beating Centennial at Centennial, Andover shot nearly 60 percent from the floor with Jerrel Enerson having the hottest hand for a 17-point night. Andover did its greatest damage during the second half when it outscored Centenial 32-24. Also contributing in abig ways were Steve Discher and Jamar Thompson, who scored 12 points each.

Anoka held it down
Anoka nearly pulled off a mild upset Jan. 25 when it limited the scoring in its game with Northwest Suburban co-leader Champlin Park. In the end, though, Champlin Park had produced just enough points in the first half to hold off Anoka 29-27. Anoka, which had eight different players contribute to its total, limited Champlin Park to just two points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth.
Still, Anoka, which scored 15 second-half points, fell short of closing a 19-12 halftime deficit.
In the 48-37 loss Jan. 21 to Andover, Steve Goldman scored 10...

In the Saturday afternoon loss to Osseo, Drost scored 13 and Derek Domino 10, while in the Tuesday night loss to Cambridge Isanti, Drost finished with 17. Unfortunately for Park in this game, a 22-6 hole proved to be too great from which to escape...
Boys' puck Blaine got a draw
The late-season-charging Blaine squad came from behind Jan. 22 to earn a 2-2 tie with highly touted Osseo.
Osseo has long been considered one of the teams a threat to win the 4AA tournament, but Blaine's recent performance also puts it in contention for the section in spite of its modest 11-7-1 record.
Playing at the Dick Vraa Arena, Osseo charged out to a 2-0 lead before the midpoint of the first period, before Blaine's Danny Sinn scored to cut the deficit to a goal. In the second period, Ricky Doriott gave Blaine its second goal and established a tie that lasted through the third perod and eight-minute period of sudden death overtime. Blaine goalie Lance Thompson stopped 34 of 36 shots, while Blaine had 29 shots on goal.
Prior to this tie, Blaine outscored Coon Rapids at Fogerty Arena 7-6. Joel Stacklie and Sinn scored back-to-back shorthanded goals during an eight-second span midway through the third period to break a 5-5 tie and give Blaine a lead it did not relinquish. Sinn had scored earlier in the game, while Blaine's other goals were scored by Matt Markgraf, Nick Johnson, Travis Persgard and Ben Lynch...
Coon Rapids also gained a tie
Following the 7-6 loss to Blaine Jan. 20, Coon Rapids came back to gain a 3-3 draw with Champlin Park at the Ice Forum Jan. 20. Brennan Vargas, Preston Ghizoni and Kevin Johnson scored to give Coon Rapids a 3-2 lead after two periods, but Champlin Park tied the game midway through the third.
In the loss to Blaine, Cory Motenson and Derek Loisel gave Coon Rapids a 2-0 first-perod lead, which Blaine wiped out by scoring five of the next six goals. Vargas scored on an early third-period power play to give Coon Rapids a 5-5 tie before Blaine jumped to the 7-5 advantage while shorthanded. Andy Kraabel scored Coon Rapids' final goal with 23 seconds remaining.
Ghizoni made sure there would not be another tie or another one-goal loss Jan. 25 against non-conference foe St. Cloud Tech at Cook Arena. No, with just under two minutes to play in regulation and Coon Rapids on a power play, Ghizoni poked home a tie-breaking and eventual game-winning goal after linemate Grant Ellena's original shot was saved by the Tech goalie. Bobby Moe, making his first appearance after suffering a knee injury four games earlier, scored Coon Rapids' first two goals...
Anoka fell to the
NWSC powers
Anoka was dispatched in consecutive Northwest Suburban outings last week and weekend by Centennial and Maple Grove, 8-2 and 3-2. Anoka had a 30-23 edge in the shots-on-goal against Maple Grove.
Andover collected
another NWSC win
Andover moved off the bottom floor of the Northwest Suburban last weekend (Jan. 22) by defeating Park Center 4-3 at the Brooklyn Park Community Center. Andover, which beat Coon Rapids earlier this year for its first conference win, entered this week with a 2-10 Northwest Suburban record and 6-12 overall. The Saturday night victory put Andover one point ahead of both Park Center and Coon Rapids in the standings before Thursday's round of games...
Girls' puck: Blaine maintained
its first-place pace
More solid goaltending and timely scoring lifted Blaine to a 4-0 victory over Champlin Park Jan. 25, assuring at least a tie for the Northwest Suburban Conference title.
Blaine came into the game with a one-game lead over rival Centennial with two losses to three. With one game remaining this weekend (vs. Andover, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 29 at Fogerty Arena), the worst Blaine can finish is 15-3. Centennial can match that record with a win over Osseo, but if Blaine prevails or just ties in its finale (vs. Andover, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 29 at Fogerty Arena), then it wins the title outright.
The 4-0 win over Champlin Park was huge in setting the stage for the final night of the conference season. It was accrued behind Ashley Nixon's 14 saves and two goals scored by Nicole Erikson and one each by Sammy Nixon and Sarah Anderson. Prior to this victory, Blaine beat Osseo 5-1 as Katie Malvin scored two oals and Sammy Nixon, Shannon Nelson and Danielle Peterson one each...

Aubri Lindberg led the charge by scoring three goals, including the game-tying and game-winnign goals at 4:31 and 4:54 of the third period during power plays. Also scoring for Anoka were Jenna Hewitt, Erin Seman and Cassie LeBlanc. In last Saturday's 8-1 win over Maple Grove, Lindberg, Erin Seman and Karli Seman scored two goals each, while LeBlanc and Brittanie Fritel scored one each...
Andover came back
to tie Coon Rapids
Amanda Trunzo's goal with 30 seconds remaining in regulation lifted Andover into a 4-4 tie with Coon Rapids Jan. 25 at the Community Center.
Coon Rapids had taken a 4-2 lead early in the third period when Jill Kobow scored her third goal of the game, but Andover's Alex Nelson scored at 7:59 to make it 4-3. After Trunzo's game-tying goal, the two teams played through a scoreless overtime period. Trunzo had scored earlier in the game as did teammate Jenna Louiselle. In addition to the three goals scored by Kobow, Terra Rasmussen also scored for Coon Rapids.
Corie Bottemiller scored Coon Rapids' only goal in a 2-1 loss to Champlin Park Jan. 22 at Cook Arena. The game was decided in the final three minutes of regulation.
Andover, meantime, edged Park Center in overtime 4-3 on Nelson's goal just 85 seconds into the sudden-death period. Trunzo, Brenna Weber and Stephanie Mechels scored Andover's goals earlier in the contest...
St. Francis was slowed by foes
First, Totino Grace handed St. Francis a 5-2 setback Jan. 22, then Cambridge Isanti did not yield Jan. 25 in a 1-1 tie. Consequently, St. Francis/North Branch slipped to fourth place in the North Suburban in spite of a 7-4-2 conference record. In the loss to Grace, the Saints were outshot 43-23 with goalie Alicia Dressel coming up with 38 saves. Meantime, Ashley Bliskowski and Neva Widner scored the only goals. St. Francis was then shut out for two periods by Cambridge Isanti in the Tuesday night 1-1 tie at Isanti Arena.
That tie was procured at 68 seconds of the third period when Katie Hosch scored. The Saints had a 28-18 edge in shots on goal in this game...
Swim/dive:Park, Anoka, Coon
Rapids teams were
all third in their
respective sections
The Spring Lake Park, Anoka and coon Rapids swimming and diving teams all placed third in their respective true-team sectional meets last weekend.
Park accomplished the feat in its class A section true-team meet it hosted, a meet it capped with a thrilling first-place finish by its 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Anoka, meantime, was third in the Section 8AA true-team sectional behind Brainerd and Alexandria while Coon Rapids took third in the Section 7AA true-team sectional behind Forest Lake and Irondale.
For the Panthers...
The 400 free relay finish was indeed the most spectacular effort of the event as it was pulled off in non-typical fashion when head coach Greg Kugler shotgunned the start with his three best swimmers - Kyle Winiecki, Jake Loesch and Sarwat Omar. This trio opened an 8-second lead over chief competitor Monticello, a lead that was left to anchor swimmer Ryan Hay. Only an eighth-grader, Hay took three seconds off his previous best 100-yard time and was just able to touch out the Monticello anchor swimmer at the wall to give Park the first place finish in 3:36.63.
In addition to this victory, Omar collected firsts in both the butterfly (52.23 seconds) and backstroke (55.82 seconds). Meantime, Winiecki and Loesch were second in the 100 freestyle (52.55) and individual medley (2:18.15) and Loesch third in the 500 freestyle (5:30.85).
Also earning medals for Park were Hay, with eighth-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and butterfly races, Tom Biedron, third and fourth in the breaststroke and individual medley races and drivers Sam Loesch Elijah Sabah and Andy Loesch, who were fifth, sixth and seventh. Park also took second in the 200-yard medley relay and third in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
For the Tornadoes...
Anoka wound up with 22 medal winners in the 8AA meet in Alexandria, though none were championship gold.
The top finisher was diver Sean Luck, who took second. In fact, divers Mike and Brian Haukos and Kyle Swokowski slammed in right behind Luck with medal-winning, top-8 finishes of fifth, sixth and seventh.
Anoka's other medal winners included Sean Parvi, fourth in the 200 freestyle, Casey DeRoo and Alex Gustafson, sixth and seventh in the individual medley race, Steve Eskro and Mike Haukos, fourth and sixth in the 50 freestyle sprint, Deroo, sixth in the butterfly, Eskro, sixth in the 100 yard freestyle, Sean Parvi and Dan Russo third and eighth in the 500 freestyle,, Gustafson and Carter Smith third and sixth in the backstroke and Matt Krumm and Isaac Aldrich, fifth and eighth in he breaststroke.
In addition, Anoka's top relay teams all finished third - 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle.
Shortly before this finish in the 8AA true-team sectional, Anoka beat the 7AA third-placef-inishing Coon Rapids team 97-89 in a conference dual meet.
This victory was not only significant as a boost to the young Anoka team which includes only three seniors, but also the first in nearly two decades over its rival...
