A contract for a traffic signal and roadway improvements at the intersection of Sunfish Lake Boulevard (County Road 57) and Alpine Drive in Ramsey has been awarded by the Anoka County Board.
The low bid from Forest Lake Contracting was $1,250,426.89, which was well under the engineer’s estimate of $1,575,375.65.
According to Doug Fischer, county highway engineer, a federal highway safety grant will pay 90 percent of the project cost with the county and the city of Ramsey sharing the remainder of the cost.
For years, there was only a two-way stop at the intersection, stopping traffic on Alpine Drive, and a host of accidents, Fischer said.
A four-way stop sign was installed as an interim measure while the county pursued the federal grant, he said.
The project does not just include traffic signals, but reconstruction of both Sunfish Lake Drive and Alpine Drive about 1,000 feet on all four sides of the intersection to include median and protected left- and right- turn lanes at the intersection, Fischer said.
The intersection will be closed during construction with the goal to get the project completed before school starts after Labor Day, according to Fischer.
