A Coon Rapids Police officer was injured Monday when the parked squad car in which he was sitting was rear-ended by a vehicle.
According to Capt. John Hattstrom, Officer Mike Abbott was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he remained Tuesday for treatment of severe back and neck pain.
Abbott had responded to an accident at Hanson Boulevard and Robinson Drive N.W. the morning of Jan. 2 and was in his squad doing paperwork on the accident investigation, Hattstrom said.
Since he had been out of the car to investigate the accident and it was parked, it would be unlikely that Abbott had his seat belt buckled when the squad was struck, he said.
The Minnesota State Patrol investigated the collision and cited the driver for having an obstructed windshield – it was frosted up, Hattstrom said – and for failing to take due care, according to Hattstrom.
Abbott has been with the Coon Rapids Police Department since June 1988.
