Man killed in Anoka apartment fire identified

A man who died in an Anoka apartment fire over the weekend has been identified.
John Rueben Pebworth, 61, was killed in the fire early Saturday morning, according to the Anoka County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Fire crews were called to an apartment building at 3030 Sixth Ave. around 4:15 a.m. on Saturday. Apartment residents were awakened and alerted by fire alarms and able to safety evacuate while calling 911.

According to Capt. Scott Nolan of the Anoka Police Department, officers were unable to enter Pebworth’s apartment due to heavy smoke and fire. He was later found in the back bedroom of the apartment.

The fire is under investigation by the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department, as will as the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and the Anoka County Fire Investigation Team.
While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, there was nothing at the scene suggesting foul play and the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
