A man has been charged with stealing a van from the parking lot of an Anoka business.

John Herbert Covey, 41, no permanent address, is facing felony charges of theft of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

Back on Dec. 27, 2011, a staff member of Vinifera Imports reported to police that the company’s 2006 work van had been stolen from the company’s parking lot on McKinley Street in Anoka.

According to the complaint, a staff member had parked the van in its normal place the night before, but it was missing in the morning.

On Jan. 21 Anoka Police were dispatched to the area of 518 Park St. to follow up on reports of a suspicious van driving in the neighborhood. The driver had been reportedly asking people for gas.

Police saw the stolen Vinifera Imports van parked in the middle of Park Street, completely blocking traffic.

Officers approached the van and allegedly found Cohey in the driver’s seat. The van was running and had a screwdriver in the ignition.

On being told to turn the van off, Cohey allegedly grabbed the screwdriver and turned it, turning the van off.

Police also allegedly discovered the van did not have the correct license plate and the license plate that was on the van was also reported stolen.
