Dennis Spears to appear with church choir in Anoka concert

Popular singer Dennis Spears appears in the second of Anoka’s First Congregational Church concert series Feb. 18, 7 p.m., in celebration of Black History Month. Spears will sing “Free at Last” music with the church’s choir under the direction of Don Shier. Spears will tell stories of growing up in the south and sing the music with which he grew up. A reception, featuring a chocolate fountain and chocolate-dipped strawberries, follows the concert. Spears has traveled internationally as part of the vocal jazz ensemble Moore By Four. Among his many appearances, he has acted on such stages as Penumbra, Guthrie, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville and Minneapolis Children’s Theater. His performance as Nat King Cole lead him to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., last year where he performed in Dominic Taylor’s “I Wish You Love.” Tickets for adults are $10, with children $5, and are available for purchase at church during office business hours or at the door. First Congregational Church is at 1923 Third Ave. in Anoka. For more information, call 763-421-3375. Photo submitted
