Erickson Metals Corporation has emerged from the recession focusing on growth.
The 40-year-old family business, an international supplier of aluminum, has its headquarters in Waterbury, Conn., as well as full-line aluminum services center in Coon Rapids, where it has been located for 25 years, and in Colorado at New Mexico.
And at its Evergreen Business Park location in Coon Rapids, it has met an increasing demand for its products by hiring a new sales person.
Katie Smith has been brought on board to handle inside sales.
Erickson Metals was founded in 1972 by Richard H. Erickson. His brothers, Bill and Bob are at the Coon Rapids plant – Bill as general manager and Bob as purchasing agent.
The brothers are all Anoka High School graduates.
Erickson Metals provides specialty aluminum products to the metal forming, stamping and fabrication industries.
The Coon Rapids plant has 28 employees, has built additions three times since it opened in 1986 and now totals 55,000 square feet.
According to Erickson Metals’ “The Symbol of Quality” booklet, the company offers more than full-line distribution products.
It also provides specialty rolling with close tolerances, precision slitting, custom shearing, cut-to-length processing and precision sawing.
And, according to Bob Erickson, it has achieved a position of leadership in the highly competitive metals industry through an emphasis on quality, superior customer service, efficient corporate structure, each location having its own ISO registration and equipment to serve all aluminum needs.
“We have been able to weather the storm of the recession and are looking to expand,” Bob Erickson said.
Business has increased which is why Erickson Metals has added to its sales force, he said.
With the addition of Smith, the sales team at the Coon Rapids location now numbers seven, Bob Erickson said.
“We have enough business to warrant an additional person,” he said.
Smith is working with all customers, setting up sales and quoting prices, he said.
“She has experience in sales and is very knowledgeable,” Bob Erickson said.
Smith grew up in North Dakota and came to Minnesota six years ago.
“I have been involved in customer service, serving other people,” she said.
In her inside sales job at Erickson Metals, Smith said she is “still helping other people and helping the business grow.”
Smith loves her new position – the quality products she is selling for Erickson Metals, her fellow employees and fact that she is working for a family business.
The mother of a seven-year-old son, Avery, Smith said she is “huge into family.”
“My family is very, very important to me,” she said.
