Bullying in state Senate

To the Editor:

Wikipedia uses the following definition for bullying: Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of power.

Last week we saw the majority in the Minnesota Senate act in ways that can only be seen as bullying by the citizens of Minnesota.

Our State Senator, Benjamin Kruse, acted with the majority leadership in a brazen power play in meeting the Republican commitment to reduce the Senate budget by taking the majority of the cuts to reach a $2 million Senate budget cut from the minority caucus, without significant cuts affecting the majority caucus.

In addition, a highly qualified and effective department head, former Sen. Ellen Anderson, was denied confirmation in a purely political action of retribution.

Is bullying the kind of leadership that we will continue to see from the majority party?

Trying to force a number of constitutional amendments to the ballot because they can’t successfully come to agreements that are acceptable to all parties involved with the legislative process.

Will the majority continue to propose legislation that bullies middle class Minnesotans or will they put away their bullying behavior and start to govern for all of Minnesota.

Nowhere to be found

To the Editor:

Where is my District 11 School Board representative Mike Sullivan? We have an important issue going on in our district and he is nowhere to be found.

Oh, now I remember. Mike flew south for the winter to be with the rest of the snowbirds. Apparently he’s been attending board meetings via Skype.

Let’s think about this. Isn’t it true that each school board rep receives a monthly stipend? Isn’t it true that they each take an oath to represent their constituents?

I sent him an e-mail asking him to contact me so I could set up a meeting with him and others whom he represents. He has not responded.

I know many others who have contacted him as well.  As usual, no response. This is the pattern I’ve experienced with Mr. Sullivan for years.

Whether he’s in the state or not, he still has an obligation and duty to respond to his constituents.

I’m wondering, should his vote have counted on the proposed respectful learning environment curriculum policy.

Mr. Sullivan represents the most conservative area in our school district and he has failed miserably at doing his job to represent his constituents.

Do us all a favor Mr. Sullivan, submit your resignation and let’s get someone in your seat who will actually do what a school board rep is supposed to do.

Classroom propaganda

To the Editor

This letter is to alert parents to the Jan. 18 release of new classroom homosexual propaganda produced by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and designed to be used in elementary schools.

It is titled “Ready, Set, Respect! GLSEN’s Elementary School Toolkit.” GLSEN is an organization that targets children to condition them to affirm and admire the homosexual lifestyle.

Its “Safe Space Kits” for secondary schools has already been distributed to all counselors, school psychologists, SLAs, prevention specialists, assistant principals, principals and some classroom teachers in our school district. Now GLSEN has a new toolkit for use in elementary schools as well.

Under the guise of bullying prevention, GLSEN’s new “Ready, Set, Respect! GLSEN’s Elementary School Toolkit” encourages teachers to give “intentional guidance” to elementary children in order to influence their attitudes about lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender cross dressers in a positive way.

This is homosexual indoctrination of vulnerable, innocent young children without parental knowledge or consent.

The “toolkit” states, “The elementary school years offer a wonderful and important opportunity to instill and/or nurture positive attitudes and respect for individual, family and cultural differences, including diversity related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.”

Other specific instructions in this elementary toolkit include:

• Make sure the analogies you use when teaching don’t rely on hetero-normative images or viewpoints.

A hetero-normative viewpoint is one that expresses heterosexuality as a given instead of being one of many possibilities. Such a viewpoint can translate into the development of all kinds of images that reinforce the view.

The assumption (reinforced by imagery and practice) that a boy will grow up and marry a woman is based on such a viewpoint. A gender-normative image, on the other hand is one that delimits the possibilities for children of either gender by reinforcing stereotyped expectations.

• Monitor choice activity time to ensure that students are not segregating themselves by gender.

• Write math problems with contexts that include a variety of family structures and gender-expressions. For example, Rosa and her dads were at the store and wanted to buy three boxes of pasta. If each costs $.75, how much will all three boxes cost?

The argument that because households headed by homosexuals exist, schools must therefore teach about them and do so in a positive manner is flat wrong.

This is a moral proposition that is not based on fact. Yes, all people are created in God’s likeness, but at the same time many attitudes, actions, family structures and relationships are disordered and should not be presented to school children as normal and worthy of imitation.

Once again, GLSEN is exploiting bullying to change and eliminate the beliefs they do not like, to undermine heterosexuality, normal male/female gender, and traditional marriage.

Our school district has been warned. No GLSEN materials should have a place in any public school. Taxpayers should be outraged when and if any teacher or teacher-training materials use GLSEN as a resource — such as the “Safe Space Kits” on the District 11 website.

Please urge our school board to keep this harmful material out of the hands of our teachers and our classrooms. Let’s make sure the GLSEN elementary school propaganda doesn’t get into our school district as well.

Concern and disgust

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my concern and disgust about Wells Fargo of Anoka on its most recent business decision of towing cars from its parking lot after business hours.

I was raised in a small Midwestern town and currently reside in Champlin. My wife and I enjoy the “small town” feel of Anoka.

Because of this, we regularly support Anoka’s downtown business.

However, this past Friday was a rude awakening on how a business treats its local residents.

After attending an event at the Lyric’s Art Theater, we decided to go to a restaurant in downtown Anoka for a bite to eat, which was around 10:30 p.m.

Seeing that the Wells Fargo parking lot was empty, I parked my car in their parking lot. In the past, I have parked numerous times (after business hours) in the Wells Fargo parking lot, never having a problem.

However, when I went to get my car around 11:15 p.m., it was gone, towed to a downtown Minneapolis impound lot.

I was shocked! I asked the local police officer and she informed me that Wells Fargo has decided to enforce a “no parking” rule. She even shook her head at me, thinking the same thing, how dumb!

She pointed to a sign that was posted in the parking lot which reads “Unauthorized or Abandoned Vehicles Towed at Owners Expense.” However, no specific time is listed on when this is enforced.

In a phone conversation with a Mr. Palmer, Wells Fargo property management, I asked why “the no parking policy.”

After many questions that ended in a “no comment” by Mr. Palmer, he finally stated “the no parking policy” was put in place so our Wells Fargo customers are ensured of ample parking.”

I then pointed out to Mr. Palmer that the Anoka Wells Fargo business hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday closed and asked why are vehicles being towed after 11 p.m. on a Friday night?

His response, “no comment”!

I asked Mr. Palmer if this policy is being enforced every business day and night, again “no comment.” I asked Mr. Palmer if this same policy also being enforced at the Champlin Wells Fargo, he said “no.” I asked why? Again, “no comment.”

An additional sign posted in the parking lot reads “Due To the Increase Concern to Provide Parking for Our Customers, Our Lot Will Be Monitored and Enforced.” Again, no hours listed of when it will be enforced.

I am currently a Wells Fargo customer. However, after this incident and also being out $228, my business will be going to another bank that wants to be a part of a community.

I now know I need to pay better attention to new policies. However, Wells Fargo of Anoka seems to be sending a negative message to the people who support downtown Anoka: Customers only, everyone else, stay out. So much for small town banking!
