Tyler Hong scored twice to guide No. 6 seed Anoka to a 2-1 Section 5AA first-round upset over No. 3 seed Centennial Thursday night. Kyle Thorpe assisted on Hong’s first goal of the night which tied the game 1-1 2:04 after the Cougars scored first.
Hong scored the game-winner 4:45 into the third period on a power play and was set up by Cale Grinde.
Anoka goalie Robbie Goor stopped 28 shots to preserve the section playoff win. The Tornadoes face No. 2 seed Blaine in the section semifinal at the Warner Coliseum at the state fairgrounds Feb. 28.
Centennial outshot the Tornadoes 29-26 in the game after a slow place in the first period went toward Centennial by a 9-5 margin.
What makes this win more impressive is that Centennial won both regular season meetings including a 4-3 win Feb. 16 in which the Cougars scored three times in the second period. Andrew Herlofsky, Jacob Mack and Thorpe each scored for Anoka in that game. Goor made 24 saves.
