The proposed hospital

The pros and cons of a city-owned and operated hospital are being widely discussed in Anoka at present, with the prospect of a $1 million bond issue vote scheduled for March 20. With the citizens’ approval, the city would proceed to use this amount, plus another $358,708 pledged by citizens to the Anoka Community Hospital Association, to build and operate a 65 bed hospital.

Youth battles the odds

Nigel Lawrence works out three times a week at the Iron Works in Ramsey, swims, plays basketball, competes in several races a year and attends school.

Since 1977 he has been hospitalized every year for two or more months and has had over 50 surgeries and hopefully, the operations are at an end. The 19-year-old Ramsey youth, a special education student at Blaine High School, is a victim of spina bifida, a congenital defect in the walls of the spinal canal that confines him to a wheelchair.
