The Spring Lake Park District 16 School Board has approved the school calendar for the 2012-2013 school year.
The calendar, with 170 student/teacher contact days, was passed by a 7-0 vote at the district’s March 6 school board regular meeting.
The calendar was developed by a task force of district administrators and staff. Prior to approving the calendar, presentations of a proposed calendar were made to PTO groups, according to Schoolboard Chairwoman Colleen Vranish.
“It’s pretty similar to last year’s,” she said about the 2012-2013 calendar in an interview with the Life.
Teachers are contracted to work 185 days. Non-student contact days are used for teacher in-services, planning and conferences.
While some school districts have shortened or done away with their spring breaks, District 16’s one-week break (five school days) remains intact for next year.
The first day of school for students in grades one through eight and Learning Alternatives Community School is set for Sept. 4. Orientation for ninth-graders and students in grades 10 through 12 is set for the same day.
The first day of school for 10th- through 12th-graders and Kindergarten Plus students is Sept. 5, while Sept. 6 will be the first day of school for the district’s a.m. and p.m. kindergartners.
The 2012 Education Minnesota Professional Conference will be held Oct. 18 and 19. School will not be in session those days.
Thanksgiving vacation is Nov. 22 and 23.
Winter break is Dec. 24 through Jan. 1. Students will return to school Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2013.
Spring break is from March 11 through 15, 2013, with a vacation day slated for Good Friday, March 29.
The last day of school for students in grades K-12 is June 6 or 7, 2013 in the event of a snow-makeup day.
District 16 serves nearly 5,100 students from Spring Lake Park and portions of Blaine and Fridley.
