Although the prep nordic season has been over for a month, a few skiers are still competing.

Among them are Andover’s Maddie McKeefry and Coon Rapids’ Ryan Heida, who took part at the TD Bank J2 (14-15 year-olds) Eastern Championships March 9-11.

McKeefry, skiing for the SISU Skiers club, placed fifth in the freestyle, second in the classic race (13 seconds behind CXC teammate Allison Ternes) and 15th in the 1K free sprint.

Heida placed 14th in the 5K freestyle, 37th in the 5K classic and 27th in the 1K free sprint. He also skied the opening leg of the winning mixed medley relay by less than five seconds.

The Central Cross Country Ski Association’s national competition team included 14 junior skiers from the central region (Midwest and Great Lakes divisions) as they competed in four races in Rumford, Maine – five kilometer freestyle and classic races plus a one kilometer prolong skate and mixed relays.

This was the first time the Midwest Region has sent skiers to this race.

Mehrhof at nationals
Coon Rapids senior Calvin Mehrhof was in the field at the junior national events at Soldier Hollow in Salt Lake City, Utah, site of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

He finished 45th in the classic sprints, 30th in the 15K freestyle and 32nd in the 10K classic.
