Unsuccessful last year, the Coon Rapids City Council is applying once again for state funding to help pay for a trail on 85th Avenue N.W.
The application to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is for a proposed trail on the south side of 85th from East River Road to the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad crossing.
The trail would connect the recently completed trail by the city of Fridley along Springbrook Nature Center to the railroad tracks.
The area south of 85th Avenue, west of the railroad tracks, is in Coon Rapids.
According to City Engineer Doug Vierzba, the Anoka County Highway Department and the Anoka County Parks Department support construction of this trail.
“If grant funds are approved in 2013, the trail could possibly be constructed in 2013,” Vierzba said.
The city could also complete the trail through Kennedy Park and connect the trail system to the Mississippi Regional Trail to the west, he said.
The preliminary cost estimate for the trail project is $280,000, Vierzba said.
The cost to the city will be known if and when the grant is approved and cost share with the county highway department.
This project was one of three trail grant submissions to the DNR last year; the other two, both on Main Street, were approved.
“This is a very needed trail connection in town,” said Councilmember Scott Schulte. “I hope we get somewhere with it this time.”
