A 31-year-old Hugo man is in critical condition at Mercy Hospital after he got involved in a fight at an Oak Grove home early Sunday morning (March 25).
The Anoka County Attorney’s Office late Monday afternoon (March 26) charged Beau John Carlstrom, 35, 12479 Unity St. N.W., Coon Rapids, with felony first-degree assault.
The next 24 to 48 hours will be critical for the victim, Mercy Hospital neurosurgical staff informed the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.
Medical personnel indicated to police that the victim had suffered head trauma that “was likely not survivable,” according to the criminal complaint.
At the time the complaint was released to the media, the victim was undergoing a second surgery to further relieve pressure on his brain. The first surgery took place when he was brought into the hospital early Sunday morning.
The sheriff’s office was dispatched to an Oak Grove home on 197th Lane N.W. at 1:18 a.m. March 25 on a report of an unconscious male who was bleeding from his mouth.
There were a couple of different versions of what happened that witnesses told police. One alleged that Carlstrom and another man were “tussling” when the victim tried to intervene and was punched in the face. A second witness alleged the victim had been wrestling another man and Carlstrom “out of nowhere” punched the victim.
In both versions, the punch allegedly caused the victim to fall and hit his head on the outdoor cement patio on which they were standing.
According to one witness, the victim was out cold and started convulsing.
When police asked Carlstrom if he had punched this man, Carlstrom allegedly replied, “I punched him.”
