John Hawkins, a seventh-grader at the Anoka Middle School for the Arts, has been named a semifinalist eligible to compete in the 2012 Minnesota National Geographic Bee.
He is the son of Charles and Mae Hawkins.
Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s bee winter.
School-level winners then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society.
Students with the top 100 scores were then invited to compete at the state level.
Hawkins will compete at the 2012 Minnesota National Geographic Bee on Friday, March 30 at St. Cloud State University.
The state winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD” and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Minnesota in the national finals at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 22 to 24.
