An innovative pilot project was recently recognized when Therapy Partners Inc. and Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Specialists, Inc (PTOSI) were awarded HealthPartners’ highest award – Excellence in Innovation.
PTOSI has five clinic locations, one of them in Coon Rapids.
The project, titled “Value-based Purchasing Model for Therapy Services,” involved collecting data on the outcomes of physical therapy treatment and using that data to develop a new payment model that rewards quality outcomes.
As members of Therapy Partners Inc, PTOSI and five other independent practices collected outcomes information using a patient-reporting tool over the course of one year.
That information helped HealthPartners in the development of a “pay-for-performance” model for therapy services that focuses payment on value rather than volume.
HealthPartners’ Excellence in Innovation award is the highest recognition in its Partners in Excellence Program which promotes The Triple Aim for healthcare reform – measurable quality, exceptional patient experience, lower cost of care.
“Because we’re an independent practice, I believe we have to work harder to compete,” said Dr. Don Darling, PT, owner and founder of PTOSI.
“We have always known that good physical therapy intervention can be effective and lower overall medical costs. We just have to measure it.”
“We were among the first practices to collect this type of data and we used it as a quality improvement tool.
“It drove professional development efforts and therapists liked having feedback.
“Now, all Therapy Partners’ clinics are collecting outcomes and I’m excited that we were able to work with HealthPartners on this project.”
PTOSI is an independent therapy practice and since 1983, its therapists have been preventing, diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal pain and movement disorders for people of all ages.
Therapy Partners Inc. is a managed service organization whose member practices are committed to providing quality outcomes at lower than average cost.
Therapy Partners’ practices include Creekside Physical Therapy, Minnesota Sport & Spine Rehab, Physical Therapy Orthopedic Sports, Inc. (PTOSI), OSI Physical Therapy and Lake Area Therapy Services.
