Andover man pleads guilty to domestic assault

A 39-year-old Andover man pleaded guilty March 26 in Anoka County District Court to a gross misdemeanor charge of domestic assault.

The Anoka County Attorney’s Office originally charged Phillip Joseph Carlson with felony domestic assault because of prior domestic incidents, but the charge was downgraded during the March 26 plea hearing, according to court records.

According to the criminal complaint, Carlson’s ex-girlfriend accused him of grabbing her around the neck, throwing her to the ground and holding her on the ground. The ex-girlfriend called police at 12:44 p.m. Jan. 16 from her East Bethel home to report the incident. While she was on the phone with the 911 dispatch, she claims that Carlson punched her in the stomach.

Carlson was convicted in April 2011 of interfering with a 911 call and misdemeanor domestic assault, according to the complaint.

Carlson’s sentencing date is June 12.
