For the second consecutive week Blaine graduate and current UW-Green Bay senior tennis player Paul Swanson was named Horizon League Men’s Tennis Player of the Week (March 26-April 1 and April 2-8).
Swanson went 2-0 while holding down the Phoenix’s top singles spot with road wins at Youngstown State and Cleveland State to improve to 15-5 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
Swanson won a straight-sets win against Youngstown State 6-2, 6-0 before dispatching Cleveland State senior Yannick Goossens, a 2011 All-Conference first team member 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to help Green Bay to a 5-2 win over the four-time defending conference champions April 7.
He teamed with senior Henning Jess for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles to earn another team point against the Vikings.
Swanson caught the eye of league officials the previous week as Green Bay opened conference action with a 6-1 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago March 26.
Swanson won his top singles match 6-1, 6-2 before handing Valparaiso’s Chris Baum a 6-3, 6-2 loss March 27. He teamed with Jess for another overwhelming win at third doubles to complete the sweep of the Crusaders on Senior Day.
