Early grass fires add to fire department work

Spring Lake Park, Blaine, Mounds View fire department is preparing for spring and grass fires. So the three stations’ maintenance engineers spent some extra time in double checking grass fire fighting equipment and vehicles. Let’s hope, that with your help, they have a minimum amount of grass fires this year.

There were 10 fire and emergency calls. The first was Monday, to 2158 Oakwood, in Mounds View, at 6:30 a.m. A seat of a pickup truck was on fire. It was extinguished with no other damage to the vehicle.

School cuts total $6.1 million

After nearly two months of hearings, discussion and debate, Anoka Hennepin District 11 School Board voted Monday to cut $6.1 million from next year’s budget in an effort to cope with declining revenues and increasing costs.

The cuts will mean larger classes, fewer electives, reduced extra-curricular activities, the reduction of 157.2 teaching positions, 12.9 administrative postilions and a number of secretarial and custodial jobs.

At Blaine High School, 1,200 students recognized for achievements

For students at Blaine High School, this school year has not been a typical one. It has been a year of lofty accomplishments and a year marred by tragedy.

Both were brought together March 25 when 1,200 students were honored for earning merit awards in the school’s Project Renaissance program.
