Bicyclist struck and killed by car in East Bethel

A 42-year-old East Bethel man riding his bicycle Tuesday evening (April 17) was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The victim was Duane Rannow, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office reported Wednesday afternoon (April 18).

According to the sheriff’s office, the man apparently tried to cross Viking Boulevard just west of Breezy Point Drive N.E. and was struck by a car traveling west on Viking Boulevard N.E. around 7:30 p.m.

The 25-year-old East Bethel man driving the vehicle had no signs of impairment and he was apparently not speeding, according to Lt. Paul Lenzmeier, who said that several witnesses reported that the bicyclist crossed Viking Boulevard right in front of traffic.

The vehicle driver was not arrested. He remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lenzmeier said the victim had severe head trauma and had some pulse and shallow breathing. He was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he was pronounced dead in the emergency department.

The case is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office and Minnesota State Patrol. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner is conducting the autopsy.
