As part of Sexual Assault Awareness month, a fund-raiser will be held for the Sexual Assault Action Team of the Alliance for a Violence-Free Anoka County. The fourth annual Zumbathon® is Saturday, April 21 at Westwood Middle School, 711 91st Ave. N.E., Blaine.
Registration starts at 12:30 p.m. and the minimum suggested donation is $10. The class runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and will be taught by several qualified instructors.
Information on how to get involved in the prevention of sexual assault will be available. Proceeds will support the Sexual Assault Action Team in its efforts to prevent sexual violence and improve access to services for victims.
“Zumba® is Latin music that makes you want to move, even if you don’t know how to dance,” said Darcy Fox, a Zumba® instructor and a member of the Sexual Assault Action Team.
“This class is for everyone, young and old, and every fitness level. It’s exercise for a good cause.”
The good cause is to promote the theme, Silent No More, adopted by the Sexual Assault Action Team.
The team brings together people to get involved in challenging this social problem through education and enhancing support for victims in Anoka County.
“Sexual assault is hard to talk about,” said Anoka County Commissioner Carol LeDoux, member of the Sexual Assault Action Team.
“The truth is this can happen to anyone’s mother, sister, daughter, son or grandchild.
Change is possible, according to Dawn Strommen, chairperson of the Sexual Assault Action Team and licensed psychologist for Lee Carlson Center. “Like any social change, this calls for community involvement to make a difference,” Strommen said.
