An open house featuring the newly remodeled Unity Hospital Family Birth Center will take place Saturday, April 28, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Unity Hospital. The event is free and open to anyone.
Those who attend will be able to tour the labor and delivery unit and family care areas.
The center recently completed a $1.8 million renovation of the rooms and department where more than 1,200 babies are born each year.
New floors, new wallcoverings, new furniture, including flat screen TVs, and updated colors are just some of the improvements in the birthing rooms.
New wood bed headboards are mounted on the walls and include a lighted glass panel with floral art.
The unit has other new artwork throughout; a revamped and coordinated family lounge includes a play area for visiting siblings.
“We are so excited to show our newly renovated Family Birth Center unit to guests attending the open house,” said Marcia Hauck, Unity Hospital director of nursing.
“The lovely surroundings better reflect the caliber of care we provide to our new moms, babies and their families.
“This is truly a special place we’ve created for families to celebrate new life.”
The event will also include health exhibits, prizes, refreshments and a Diaper Derby race.
The Diaper Derby at 1 p.m. is a crawling race for babies six to 15 months in age. There will also be an activity and play area for older children.
At noon, the new Spirit of Unity sculpture will be unveiled near the front entrance of the hospital, which is located at 550 Osborne Road in Fridley.
The sculpture, by Minnesota artist Greg Conboy, was commissioned by the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation.
