The annual Randy Bauer Memorial 5K Walk/Run will take place Saturday, May 5 with registration opening at 7 a.m. and the race starting at 8:15 a.m.
The race begins across the street from Crossroads Alternative High School, 1313 Coon Rapids Blvd. N.W., Coon Rapids, at the intersection of Coon Rapids Boulevard and Avocet Street and follows a loop course through the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park.
Bauer was a Crossroads Alternative High School science teacher from 1999 until 2007 when he lost his battle with cancer.
“He was someone who loved what he was doing, no matter what it was, but he especially loved teaching,” said Dennis Olson, race organizer and Crossroads teacher.
“He was contagiously enthusiastic, always positive and uplifting. He believed that life was about relationships and that our affect on one another as people was extremely critical.
“He was also someone who continually set goals and worked hard to attain them. One of those goals involved a 7,516-mile kayak journey that earned him a place for five years in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest journey by paddle and portage.”
According to Olson, Bauer was an enthusiastic runner, having completed 19 Grandma’s marathons, the 19th while battling cancer.
“Your donations and participation in this race can help fight the disease that took his life and help continue the legacy of Mr. Bauer by providing the type of hands on science-related life experiences he wanted for our students,” Olson said.
Proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.
“It was this research and clinical drug trials that gave Randy Bauer at least two extra years of quality life,” Olson said.
In addition, money raised from the walk/run will go to providing Crossroads students with out-of-the classroom science-related experiences that would otherwise be unavailable due to budget constraints.
In the past, proceeds have helped fund several annual trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for Crossroads students, as well as a preparation trip to the Raptor Center last year.
People can register for the event online at www.randybauer5k.org until midnight May 3 or pick up a registration form in the main office at the school.
To register by mail complete the registration form and send it to 1313 Coon Rapids Blvd. N.W., Coon Rapids, MN 55433, along with a check payable to Randy Bauer Memorial 5K.
Registration fees are $25 per walker/runner until May 5, $15 for current Crossroads/District 11 students/former Crossroads students and $30 race day registration.
Each participant will receive a T-shirt with entry fee and refreshments on completion of the race.
Top finishers in each age group will receive awards at the post-race award program.
Stop in the school before or after the race to check out the student/staff art show. Displays of current and former staff and students will line the hallways, including several of Bauer’s framed photographs.
