Motorists should exercise caution this coming weekend and plan alternate routes around a Jefferson Street N.E. road closure just off 125th Avenue in Blaine.
Jefferson Street N.E. will be closed to all traffic between Main Street and 129th Lane N.E. Saturday, May 5, at 7 a.m. through Sunday, May 6, at 7 p.m.
The closure is related to the County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 14 design-build project, said Charles Cadenhead Jr., Anoka County Highway Department project manager.
“They are going to cut out the roadway between Bengal Drive and 125th Lane north of Main Street,” he said. “It’s too narrow to do it one-half at a time.”
Cadenhead said the detour route is Main Street/125th Avenue to Polk Street N.E. to 129th Lane N.E. to Jefferson Street.
The entrance to Roosevelt Middle School at Main Street/125th Avenue and Jefferson Street will be reduced to a single lane Saturday May 5, he said.
Flagging crews will be in place to direct traffic.
“We don’t have the road width to put traffic on one side of the road or another,” he said. “We have limited area to work within, unlike University to the south of Main Street. We haven’t had to close that. We’ve just been shifting traffic to the east and west side lanes, depending upon where the road work is occurring.”
The road will be restored to a gravel base Sunday and paved Monday, May 7.
“We’ve coordinated with [District 11’s] transportation people at Roosevelt and Blaine High School,” he said. “People will still be able to get to Roosevelt via Main Street to get to southbound Jefferson. They will be able to access Blaine High School from Bengal Drive and University Avenue.”
Reconstruction of the south side of125th Avenue between Jefferson Street and Ulysses Street also has begun, Cadenhead said.
He urged motorists traveling in the area of Blaine High School, Roosevelt and Johnsville Elementary to consider carpooling.
