Members of the Coon Rapids American Legion and VFW, as well as their auxiliaries, were at the Coon Rapids City Council meeting May 1 to receive a proclamation from Mayor Tim Howe declaring May 19 and 20 poppy days in the city.

Those two days members of the Legion, VFW and the auxiliaries will be taking donations for the red poppies.

The memorial poppy, which is assembled by veterans who are disabled, is designed to recognize those who have been killed in war as well as benefit living veterans and their families.

According to the proclamation, the public donations fund rehabilitation programs at the local level that benefit veterans, their families and ultimately the state and nation.

“The basic purpose of the annual distribution of poppies is eloquently reflected in the desire to ‘honor the dead by helping the living’,” the proclamation states.
