Blaine resident, three council incumbents file first day

Three Blaine City Council incumbents and a single Blaine resident filed their affidavits of candidacy Tuesday.

In Blaine, the offices of mayor and councilmembers in Wards 1, 2 and 3 will be open on the Nov. 6 ballot.

The terms of Mayor Tom Ryan, Ward 1 Councilmember Dick Swanson, Ward 2 Councilmember Mike Bourke and Ward 3 Councilmember Russ Herbst expire Jan. 7, 2013.

The filing period began at 8 a.m. May 22 and runs through 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, except for Monday, May 28 when government offices will be closed for the Memorial Day weekend.

Ryan, 12147 Radisson Road; Swanson, 8702 Hastings Circle ;and Herbst, 12875 Lever Street N.E., filed Tuesday along with Dave Morrell, 2457 Tournament Players Circle S.

Morrell filed for the Ward 2 seat held by Bourke.

Blaine candidates will file for four-year terms expiring in 2016. The filing fee is $50. The deadline for withdrawing names from candidacy is 5 p.m., Thursday, June 7.

In Blaine, the office of mayor is an at-large position. Council candidates must be a resident of the election district in Blaine from which the prospective candidate seeks election.

All candidates must be at least 21 years of age.
