Brig. Gen. Kevin S. Gerdes will be the guest speaker at Anoka’s annual Memorial Day service.
The service will take place Monday, May 28, 10 a.m., at the site of the Anoka Veterans Memorial at Forest Hill Cemetery. The cemetery is located at West Main Street and Highway 10.
Along with the guest speaker, the service will feature the North Suburban Concert Band, student recitations and memorials to the veterans.
Gerdes is an assistant division commander-support for the 34th Infantry “Red Bull” Division with the Minnesota Army National Guard.
He joined the National Guard in 1979 and received his commission as a second lieutenant in 1982 through the reserve officer training program at St. John’s University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Upper Iowa University in 1993.
During his 32-year career, Gerdes has served in a variety of position, including executive officer and commander at the battery, battalion and brigade level as well as state personnel director for the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program.
Gerdes served a tour of duty in Iraq as the commander of the First Battalion 151st Field Artillery, where he earned a bronze star. He has also served as chief of staff for the Minnesota Army National Guard.
He is a graduate of the United States Army War College, holds a master’s degree in strategic studies and is currently enrolled in the doctorate of leadership program at the University of St. Thomas.
