Sara J. Criger is the new president of Mercy Hospital and senior vice president of Allina Health.
She is currently the vice president of HealthEast Care System and chief executive officer of St. Joseph’s Hospital.
“Sara is a well-respected, value based, staff and physician friendly health care executive, who will be a great addition to the team at Mercy Hospital and Allina Health,” said Jeffrey D. Peterson, executive vice president of the Hospital Division of Allina Health.
Criger has more than 28 years of experience managing large hospitals and clinics.
At St. Joseph’s, she led the planning, design and construction of a $120 million facility expansion of an inpatient tower, surgical services and emergency department.
Criger was also instrumental in developing a neurovascular program with physician partners, including The National Brain Aneurysm Center.
Under her leadership, three HealthEast hospitals earned primary stroke center certification, St. Joseph’s developed comprehensive stroke criteria and nine community hospitals received telestroke services, Peterson said.
In addition, she led the implementation of HealthEast Heart Care and integrated 19 cardiologists into HealthEast from multiple private practices and new recruits, he said.
Criger has also held key leadership positions at Fairview, including president of Fairview Ridges Hospital and vice president of ambulatory services at University Medical Center.
Mercy, which is a non-profit hospital that serves the northwestern Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, is part of Allina Health, a not-for-profit health care system with 90-plus clinics, 11 hospitals, 15 pharmacies, specialty care centers and specialty medical services that provide hospice care, oxygen and home medical equipment and emergency medical transportation services.
