A 19-year-old East Bethel woman will be on probation the next five years and she must pay $351 in restitution to the neighbor whose house she broke into last year.
Amanda Rose Owens had pleaded guilty April 9 in Anoka County District Court to a felony charge of second-degree burglary. Her sentencing terms were handed down May 23.
According to the criminal complaint, Owens squeezed through a dog door to get access to her neighbor’s home at about 7:50 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2011. Authorities saw the whole crime on camera because the neighbor had become suspicious that someone was breaking into their home.
Authorities watched as Owens walked through the home, rummaged through some things and drank a Red Bull out of the refrigerator before leaving her neighbor’s home at 8:10 a.m.
The neighbor informed police that the woman in the video was a former babysitter that lives next door.
In a post-Miranda statement, Owens admitted to entering the home through the dog door three separate days early in the morning. She said she stole a camera with the intent to sell it at a pawn store for money. She also admitted to stealing a jar of money.
According to the complaint, she told police that she needed to money to pay for 20 to 30 pornography DVDs she had purchased.
Owens was given credit for the three days she spent in the Anoka County Jail after being arrested for this crime.
