Huskies, Saints head to state track meet

Andover Huskies boys jumped, threw and raced past Section 7AA rivals, taking home the championship team trophy and sending them all to the state tournament.

Meanwhile, the Andover girls placed fourth in team totals and sent six individuals to the state tournament.

St. Francis teammates Maggie Ewen and Jessica Justin are also state tournament bound – Ewen for her record-setting discus throw and shot put first-place wins and Justin for her 35 feet 4.25 inches triple jump first-place win.

Ewen threw the discus 150 feet, 8 inches – 20 feet farther than second-place finisher Molli Detloff of Elk River.

In shot put, Ewen’s throw of 46 feet, 8 inches beat Forest Lake’s Sam Anderson by more than seven feet.

Ewen, a junior, is the defending state champion in shot put and is favored to win it again. She’s already crossed the 48-foot threshhold, about three inches behind the Class AA state meet record set in 2002 by Liz Podominick from Lakeville.

Ewen is also the two-time defending state champion in discus, but her competition is fierce coming from the likes of Angela Guenther from White Bear Lake and Lakeville South’s Jordyn Thornton.

The St. Francis thrower threw 172 feet, seven inches in mid-May, which would shatter by 10 feet the Class AA state meet record set in 2008 by Grand Rapids’ Jessica Cagle.

“Maggie has unbelievable strength and an even greater work ethic. Despite the success and spotlight she remains humble and strives for continued improvement,” said coach Andrew Forbort.
