Coon Rapids’ population has inched higher since 2010 U.S. Census figures were released.
According to new Metropolitan Council estimates, the city’s population as of April 1, 2011 was 61,766.
That compares with the 2010 U.S. Census figure of 61,476, which was slightly down from the 2000 U.S. Census number of 61,607.
The new Metropolitan Council preliminary estimates also list the number of households in Coon Rapids at 23,601 and the average household size at 2.6 persons.
The council plans to certify final estimates by July for the state of Minnesota to use in allocating local government aid (Coon Rapids does not receive any) and local street aid.
According to Todd Graham, Metropolitan Council principal demographer, starting with the 2010 Census, the council estimates current population and households through changes in housing stock, occupancy rates and persons per household.
Sources include the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and housing stock data, manufactured home parks and group quarters data collected by Metropolitan Council Research, Graham said.
The 2010 U.S. Census data is used as the starting point, he said.
Other data from the 2011 Metropolitan Council population estimates for Coon Rapids includes:
• 15,495 single-family detached homes.
• 4,334 townhome units.
• 389 duplex, three-plex and four-plex units.
• 4,008 multi-family housing units.
• 240 manufactured homes.
Under state law, the city has until June 25 to comment, ask questions or list specific objections in writing to the preliminary numbers.
