Relieve Medical Supply celebrated its grand opening and welcome into the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce at its new branch at 11490 Hanson Blvd., Coon Rapids, June 6.
Relieve Medical Supply started at a former location in Blaine on June 6, 2005, located near Play It Again Sports. Owner Lara Fatunbi said she decided to move because of slow business.
“It was very, very strained and slow,” Fatunbi said. “It was dry.”
Fatunbi and her family already lived in Coon Rapids and loved the community, so they decided moving the business to the city would be a good fit. Relieve Medical Supply opened for business Feb. 6 at its Coon Rapids location.
At the grand opening, many MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce members welcomed Fatunbi and Relieve Medical Supply staff members into the community with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and gift basket.
“It was sad to see this building vacant for so long,” MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce President Lori Higgins said.
Relieve staff handed out gift bags to visitors and offered grilled hot dogs and snacks.
Relieve Medical Supply sells medical supplies to the public as well as medical businesses, including assisted living facilities, nursing homes and doctors offices.
Fatunbi said the majority of its clients are from the general public and around 80 percent of them are paying for supplies through some form of insurance, including Medicare.
Relieve sells a wide variety of medical products, excluding medicine.
“We focus on products that help people when they’re in the community or in their home,” Fatunbi said. “Anything that helps them live independently.”
Fatunbi and her husband Jonathan also own a home care agency, Relieve Care Inc.
Many clients needed medical supplies and Fatunbi provided them free of charge. After a while they saw the need to provide supplies greatly increasing and decided to start a medical supply business.
Fatunbi said although there are other medical supply companies in the area, Relieve puts a larger emphasis on product education, not just selling.
“You can go to CVS or Menards and get a transport chair, but what we can give you with our knowledgeable, trained staff is better,” she said.
Relieve has around seven staff members that are trained to help with fittings and provide help with choosing the right product.
Fatunbi hopes that the business will benefit the community of Coon Rapids by bringing sustainable products, product education and excellent customer service.
“They won’t have to drive far… to get what they need,” she said. “It’s easy access.”
For the first year Relieve Medical Supply is open, Fatunbi hopes the company will be able to truly learn the demographics of its location and make the public aware of its presence.
She said they have already put extra effort into their signage to bring awareness, including advertising with the Anoka County Shopper.
“We hope to bring awareness to the community that we’re here… reap the benefit of a good location,” Fatunbi said.
