A used vehicle sales lot has been approved for a vacant site along East River Road.
The Anoka City Council supported a conditional use permit for the site, which earlier this spring had also received approval to be used as a garden center.
But the company that had planned to lease the space to sell plants and shrubs opted not to set up shop this summer at 814 East River Road, according to Erik Thorvig. Before granting the new permit the city did revoke the conditional use permit for the garden center.
While vacant since November 2009 causing the previous conditional use permit to expire, the property had been allowed as a used car sales lot since 1991.
This recent approval was granted to ONG Auto, which also operates a used car sales lot in Farmington.
According to Thorvig, staff contacted planners in Farmington who reported there had not been any compliance issues with the business. ONG received its conditional use permit to operate in Farmington back in April 2010.
In Anoka, a used car sales operation is allowed in a B-1 Highway Business District by conditional use permit only.
Unanimously approved by the Planning Commission, members did attach a list of 18 conditions that come with the permit.
The new business owner will be required to resurface or repave any areas where vehicles will be parked in order to prevent pollutants from getting into the soil. ONG will also be required to rebuild the planter along East River Road and landscape along the south and west property signs.
The city is also requiring the sign poles and face of the canopy on the lot to be repainted.
Junk vehicles will not be allowed on the lot.
