Athletes make du with stifling heat to complete race at Coon Rapids Dam

Running and pedaling along the mighty Mississippi, some 160 athletes competed in the third-annual Du @ the Dam on a sweltering Saturday, June 30.

Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park’s 446 acres set the stage as athletes ran a three-mile leg, then bicycled 14 miles, then ran the final three-mile leg of the race.

Stifling heat and humidity couldn’t melt athletes’ determination to complete the event – and some came from as far away as Mankato and Farmington, St. Louis Park and Waconia.

Luke Nelson, age 38 of Ramsey, was the overall winner, finishing the Du in 1:16:19.

Megan Rocker, age 35 of Oakdale, was the first female finisher with a time of 1:29:49.

Course records, set in 2010, were set by Chad Millner (1:14:16) and Marlo McGaver (1:22:44).

The Du @ the Dam offered age groups and categories for everyone – Elite, Clydesdale, Athena, men’s teams, women’s teams and coed teams.

Age groups included 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and older.

Custom medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each category, and Nelson and Rocker each received Du @ the Dam trophies for their win.
