Hollis Cavner’s Blaine-based Pro Links Sports has scored management and operational duties at yet another highly coveted PGA Champions Tour event.
Cavner recently confirmed he’s been “busy as heck” setting up a Chicago-area office for the 2013 Encompass Championship at North Shore Country Club.
Encompass, a subsidiary of Northbrook-Ill. based Allstate Insurance, will be the title sponsor of the golf event in Glenville, Ill., an affluent suburb of Chicago.
“Everybody in the country was trying to get it,” Cavner said. “We have to move a full-time staff of seven people into Chicago.”
Cavner said he’s going to pull staff from Pro Links offices in Houston, San Antonio, Blaine, Boga Raton and California to round out staffing for the new event.
“Chicago is familiar territory,” Cavner said. “I did the 1997 Senior Open [at Olympic Fields] and the 1990 U.S. Open [at the Medinah Country Club].”
In 1933, North Shore hosted the U.S. Open won by Johnny Goodman.
It has also hosted the Western Open on one occasion (1928) and the U.S. Amateur on two occasions (1939 and 1983) as well as the 2011 Western Amatuer.
The twisty, tree-lined course was designed by legendary English golf course architect Harry Colt.
“It’s a top quality course,” Cavner said. “It reminds me a lot of Interlachen Country Club [in Edina]. It’s a very high-end club located in a great part of the city.”
Pro Links Sports now controls more than 25 percent of the management and operations stake for PGA Champions Tour events, Cavner said.
For nearly 20 years, Cavner has guided Pro Links Sports as it has grown from managing one PGA tour event to six and added numerous executive outings, corporate hospitality, golf merchandising, trip packages and other services.
Cavner, his tour directors and staff oversee all aspects of the strategic planning and organization that goes into putting on such Champions Tour events as the Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla., and the Insperity Championship in Houston, Texas.
Cavner is currently working the Nature Valley First Tee Open scheduled this week in Pebble Beach, Calif.
“We are pretty excited about what we are doing,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of good things happening and continue to have great corporate sponsors for all of our Champions Tour events – 3M here in Minnesota, AT&T, Encompass/Allstate and Allianz, and when you add Nature Valley and General Mills in Pebble Beach, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
