Accordion player Bill Koncar and his band will be featured at the Coon Rapids Arts Commission’s 2012 Thursday Nites Live free summer concert Thursday, July 19 at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park.
Koncar and his band will perform at 7 p.m. in the performance pavilion.
Koncar first took guitar lessons in the 1960s in Joliet, Ill., and formed a band with some friends in the 1980s before moving to the Twin Cities in the mid-1980s with his wife and children.
The band, which features Koncar on midi-accordion and vocals, son Andy Koncar on drums, John Dochniak on guitar, banjo and vocals and John Patton on saxophone, plays a wide variety of music, including polkas, waltzes, fox trots, Latin, swing, country and classic rock.
As well as appearing regularly on the “Polka Spotlight” Twin Cities cable television show, Kroncar and has band perform frequently at Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit Bavarian Restaurant and Bar in Minneapolis and the Bayrischer Hof Bavarian Restaurant and Bar in Montrose.
The remainder of the 2012 nine-concert series schedule is:
• July 26 – Island Time Band, island party/dance.
• Aug. 2 – Betty Rydell and Randi Rae, country/gospel.
• Aug. 9 – The Hillbilly Mafia, top 40 country.
The Shortstop Bar & Grill on Northdale Boulevard is sponsoring eight of the nine concerts this year.
During the concerts, Boy Scout Troop 524, Church of the Epiphany, is selling popcorn, candy, soda and water, while the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club has food items such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos and cheese and brats for sale.
The Coon Rapids Arts Commission, which is a volunteer advisory commission to the city council, plans arts events in Coon Rapids throughout the year.
The Anoka County Parks and Recreation Department is co-sponsoring the series. It is not charging admission to the regional park for the concerts.
