The Andover Family Fun Fest last Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14 once again drew a large crowd of people looking for family fun activities.
There was some bad luck on Friday the 13th because a thunderstorm rumbled in when the evening activities were getting ready to start, but volunteer Fun Fest organizer Nancy DeSteno said there was still a good crowd that stuck around and took shelter until the rain slowed to a drizzle. A decent audience came out for the Friday night street dance and right after the Rockin’ Hollywoods played its last note, it poured.

It was bright, sunny and warm on Saturday. DeSteno estimated that thousands of people came through although many will come for the morning activities and the parade, take a break in the afternoon and come back for the evening’s activities, DeSteno said.
Saturday’s events started out at 8 a.m. with 535 participants taking part in the 5K fun run/walk, according to the run’s organizer Cindy DeRuyter. The younger runners then did their own fun run/walk.
Many familiar events such as the parade, car show, inflatable playground and helicopter rides made a return visit.
The craft and gift show drew 88 vendors. The Hometown Hockey Classic featured four teams, according to Cindy Ramseier, administrative assistant for the community center.
Instead of petting a bunny or llama, kids were able to pet a tiger fur and learn more about spiders, skunks and many other animals through the Minnesota Zoomobile. This was a new attraction.
DeSteno said the area was packed with people Saturday night for the street dance featuring the band The Law and for the fireworks show.
