There will be a change of pace for the seventh concert in the Coon Rapids Arts Commission’s 2012 Thursday Nites Live free summer Thursday, July 26 at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park – steel drum music.
Dave Herzog’s Island Time Band will be performing island party/dance music at 7 p.m. in the performance pavilion.
According to the Island Time Band website, Herzog has been performing on his island steel drums from the waters of Key West, Fla., to the shores of Minnesota lakes for years and has become one of the premier steel drum musicians in both areas.
Herzog has appeared on network television’s “Good Morning America,” “The CBS Early Show” and “The Today Show” as well as cable television’s The Travel Channel and The Weather Channel.
He was also nominated for Musician of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010 in the Trop Rock Music Awards.
The remaining two events in the 2012 nine-concert series schedule are:
• Aug. 2 – Betty Rydell and Randi Rae, country/gospel.
• Aug. 9 – Sonny Winberg Band, top 40 country.
The Shortstop Bar & Grill on Northdale Boulevard is sponsoring the Island Time Band performance, one of eight in the 2012 concert series that it is sponsoring.
For refreshments at the performance pavilion, Boy Scout Troop 524, Church of the Epiphany, is selling popcorn, candy, soda and water, while the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club has food items such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos and cheese and brats for sale.
The Coon Rapids Arts Commission, which is a volunteer advisory commission to the city council, plans arts events in Coon Rapids throughout the year.
The Anoka County Parks and Recreation Department is co-sponsoring the series. It is not charging admission to the regional park for the concerts.
