The final concert in Coon Rapids Arts Commission’s 2012 Thursday Nites Live at the Dam series will take place at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park performance pavilion Thursday, Aug. 9, 7 p.m.
The Sonny Winberg Band will be performing top 40 country music in this ninth concert of the free, outdoor summer series.
According to Kris Linquist, city staff liaison to the Coon Rapids Arts Commission, the Hillbilly Mafia was originally booked for this concert.
But the Hillbilly Mafia broke up and the name of the new band, which comprises pretty much the same performers, is Sonny Winberg, Linquist said.
Winberg’s music career began as a bet from co-workers to sing at a karaoke contest, which he won, according to the band’s My Space online site.
He has performed at the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree in Nashville, Branson Music Theaters and in Texas Honky-Tonk’s.
Performances at Midwest Country in Sandstone have been televised nationwide on the RFD TV network and he and the band have performed at the Minnesota State Fair.
According to the My Space site, Winberg placed in the top 10 out of over 1,300 entries of an online singing contest sponsored by Capitol Records Nashville and performed during the 2005 European Country Music Awards in Austria.
Originally from Siren, Wis., Winberg has been living and working in the Twin Cities area for eight years. He’s a songwriter and self-taught guitar player.
Band members are Winberg, lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Joshua Micheal, lead vocals and bass; Neil Uhlenhake, lead guitar and vocals; Jeff Waldeland, steel guitar; and Tom Duda, drums.
The Shortstop Bar & Grill on Northdale Boulevard is sponsoring the Aug. 9 series finale, one of eight in the 2012 series that it has sponsored.
Before and during the concert at the performance pavilion, Boy Scout Troop 524, Church of the Epiphany, will be selling popcorn, candy, soda and water, while the Coon Rapids North Star Lions Club has food items such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos and cheese and brats for sale.
The Coon Rapids Arts Commission, which is a volunteer advisory commission to the city council, plans arts events in Coon Rapids throughout the year.
The Anoka County Parks and Recreation Department is co-sponsoring the series. It is not charging admission to the regional park for the concerts.
