The Franklin Summer Flyers program was in full swing again this summer for first- to fifth-grade students at the Anoka elementary school.
Over the course of six weeks, Franklin staff coordinated activities for approximately 70 students, said Don Gawreluk, who teaches fifth grade at Franklin.
Students receive math and reading support but also took weekly field trips to places like Lake George, French Lake Regional Park, Elm Creek Park and Anoka County libraries. Guest speakers included national yo-yo master Dazzling Dave and volunteers from the Anoka County Humane Society.
The Franklin Summer Flyers program has been in place for 18 years. In his 17 years with the program, Gawreluk said he has seen it grow from 15 or 20 kids to its current enrollment, providing lunch, field trips, education support and transportation for any student who is in need.
The program is offered free for the kids who participate with support from the Anoka Anti-Crime Commission, Anoka Employees Club and Anoka-Hennepin Targeted Services.
This summer’s theme celebrated the Olympics, with the students reading and participating in events while learning about other countries all summer long.
