Coon Rapids primary election information

Coon Rapids voters will go to the polls in the primary election Tuesday, Aug. 14 to cull candidates in three Coon Rapids City Council races.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for primaries in wards 1 and 2, as well as for the at-large seat on the council.

The top two vote-getters in each of the three primaries will advance to the Tuesday, Nov. 6 general election.

There are five candidates on the ballot in Ward 2, where incumbent Councilmember Melissa Larson is not seeking re-election.

They are Ken Boelter, Sonia Evans, Ron Manning, Tracy Trull and Jeramy Wyttenback.

The at-large seat on the council, which has four candidates, is also an open position because Councilmember Scott Schulte is not seeking another term.

Vying for the two spots on the general election ballot are Ethan Campbell, Roger Johnson, Sean Novack and Steve Wells.

In Ward 1, incumbent Councilmember Denise Klint has been challenged by Chad Newman and Jerry Pierce in her bid for another term.

The fourth council seat on the ballot this year is in Ward 4, where Councilmember Jerry Koch is unopposed.

Because of redistricting that took place earlier this year following the 2010 U.S. Census, Coon Rapids will have several new polling places for this year’s elections.

Redistricting has shifted ward and precinct boundaries in the city, although the number of precincts, 22, remains the same.

“While many of the same polling locations are being utilized, most are being designated for different precincts,” said City Clerk Cathy Sorensen.

According to Sorensen, new polling locations include the Coon Rapids Ice Center, Bunker Hills Golf Course, Emma B. Howe YMCA, Coon Rapids American Legion and the Coon Rapids VFW.

In a couple of cases, two precincts have the same polling places.

The Anoka County Elections Department has sent  postcards to all registered voters to let them know their ward, legislative districts and polling locations.
