A family’s journey from a former communist country to freedom is the topic of the Coon Rapids Senior Services monthly Tea Talk presentation Wednesday, Aug. 22, 1:30 p.m., at the Coon Rapids Civic Center.
Speaker Peter Vodenka, his wife and two small children in 1983 defected from behind the Iron Curtain.
In the middle of a cold, rainy night they ran for their lives from then-communist Czechoslovakia to western Austria while being chased by guards with automatic weapons, according to Kris Niebler, Coon Rapids Senior Services program specialist.
“They spent years planning their escape, knowing the brutal consequences that awaited them if they were caught,” Niebler said.
“When Peter and his family came to America, they spoke no English and had no idea how to make a living.”
Vodenka’s presentation will tell how the family made their American dream come true, Niebler said.
Refreshments will be served following the program.
The cost is $3.
