Holder plays for Central Lakes College

He is a 5-foot, 10-inch, 198-pound wide receiver who graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 2012.

Holder is among 55 student athletes on the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III team, which last season was nationally ranked in the Top 20 much of the way during a 7-3 season.

Central Lakes College expected to contend for another Minnesota College Athletic Conference championship.

CLC has been in the hunt each of Head Coach Greg Medeck’s five years during a 41-14 career. The Raiders have made three consecutive post-season bowl appearances.

“We are seeing good competition at every position,” Medeck said. “The outlook is promising for the 2012 season for this experienced and motivated squad.”

CLC opened its season Aug. 23 at Northland (Thief River Falls) and plays its first home game in Brainerd Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1:30 p.m. versus Mesabi Range.

Leonhardt earns All-American honors

• Bemidji State University senior tight end Brian Leonhardt of Blaine earned his third 2012 preseason All-American honor Aug. 20, when he was named to the D2 versus NAIA Senior Bowl Preseason All-American First Team Offense, presented by the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL).

The CDFL is the sponsor of the second annual D2 versus NAIA Senior Bowl to be held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1 p.m. The bowl game features players who will have earned the right to showcase their talents among the best of their peers. The final teams are selected by a committee and announced in November at the conclusion of the regular season.

Only graduating seniors in 2013 were eligible for the preseason honors.

A 2012 Beyond Sports College Network 2012 Division II Preseason All-America Honorable Mention and USA College Football NCAA Division II Preseason All-American Third Team Offense, in 2011, Leonhardt earned Daktronics All-America Second Team Offense, All-America Honorable Mention, Daktronics, Inc. Super Region #3 First Team, All-NSIC First Team and Consensus Draft Services 2011 Preseason All-America Honorable Mention Football Team honors.

Leonhardt started all 11 games and led the team in receptions (35) and reception yards (483), to surpass his totals from 2010 and established career highs in both categories. He averaged 43.9 yards per game and 13.8 yards per reception with two touchdowns.

With a 3.68 GPA in business administration, Leonhardt was named Capital One Academic All-America Division II Second Team and Capital One All-Academic All-District VII College Division First Team for his efforts in the classroom. Leonhardt was also named 2011 Fall Academic All-NSIC.
