Blaine man pleads guilty to amended charges in domestic incident

An attempted murder charge has been dropped against a Blaine man as part of a plea agreement in Anoka County District Court Aug. 17.

Chary Kannan Venkat, 42 , had been charged June 12 with three felony counts – attempted second-degree murder, terroristic threats and domestic assault by strangulation.

Instead, Venkat entered a guilty plea Aug. 17 to the terroristic threats charge as well as an amended charge of gross misdemeanor interference with an emergency phone call.

Sentencing was set for Sept. 25. Venkat remains in jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

According to the complaint, Blaine Police responded to an assault report at an address on 119th Avenue the evening of June 10 where a woman said that Venkat had been acting strangely and when she asked him if he had been taking his medications, he grabbed her by the hair and pushed her to the floor, then started to choke her.

She alleged that Venkat put his finger in her mouth to try and pry her jaw open, then grabbed her by the head and tried to twist it.

Police photographed red marks on the woman’s neck and her bloody lips.

When police asked Venkat if he knew why they had been called to the residence, he allegedly responded because he had tried to kill the woman by snapping her neck.

He alleged that she was trying to poison him via medications.

According to court documents, Venkat was taking medications for anxiety and depression.
