Blaine apartment unit damaged in fire

Multiple people were evacuated Friday evening (Sept. 21) from the Cloverleaf Apartments in Blaine when a fire started in a third-floor unit.

Firefighters responded to the apartment building on the 9400 block of Polk Street at 8:40 p.m. The fire did not get beyond this one unit and nobody was hurt, according to Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View (SBM) Fire Chief Nyle Zikmund.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Zikmund believes there are about 24 units in this three-story building. He later learned that the unit that caught fire was lived in by a renter and a friend, but only one of them was home and evacuated when the fire started.

The third floor and a portion of the second floor were immediately evacuated when the firefighters arrived. The Coon Rapids and Fridley fire departments provided mutual aid, Zikmund said.

Zikmund said at one point, the fire did a rollover flash, meaning the fire went from the floor to the ceiling.

“We haven’t had an apartment fire like that in over a decade,” he said.
