The seventh-ranked Bethel football team hung on for a thrilling one-point win Sept. 29 at Augsburg, with linebacker Seth Mathis of Anoka doing a little bit of everything to lead the vaunted Royals’ defense in the win. Not only did Mathis make 15 tackles to help limit Augsburg’s explosive offense, but he also snagged a pair of crucial interceptions that helped Bethel remain among the unbeaten. For his performance, Mathis was named the MIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week.
Mathis was a tackling machine in Bethel’s Sept. 29 win, making five solo tackles and joining in on 10 assisted stops for a total of 15 tackles in the big win. The junior’s two interceptions were also vital to the Royals’ win. Both picks came in the third quarter of the one-point win, as the first ended Augsburg’s first drive of the second half and ended up in a Bethel touchdown, and the second halted an Auggie drive after they had marched into Royals’ territory. This season, Mathis ranks third in the MIAC with 47 total tackles and his three interceptions are the second-most in the conference.
With the win, the Royals remained in a tie atop the MIAC standings, with a perfect 4-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in conference play thus far. Bethel – ranked seventh in the latest AFCA Top 25 poll – will face an undefeated foe for the second straight week when it hosts No. 23 Concordia tomorrow (Saturday) for its Homecoming game. The Royals and Cobbers will kick off the crucial MIAC and Top 25 matchup in Arden Hills at 1 p.m.
