SLP purchases new GPS system

The Spring Lake Park Public Works Department will soon be getting a new tool to help it keep track of its utilities around town.

The Spring Lake Park Council Oct. 2 unanimously approved purchasing a $12,245 GPS (Global Positioning System) and software from CompassTools for the water and sewer department.

According to Public Works Director Terry Randall, the new system will allow him to map out the locations of structures, signs, trees and fire hydrants.

The program with also work with the GIS (Geographic Information System) program the city is already using, Randall said.

Eventually everything will be mapped out on the computer and the information will available for staff and contractors in the future, he said.

“One nice thing about this is I can take a picture of a … sign and if someone runs it over, I know what was there,” Randall said.

The GPS system will be paid for using the city’s water and sewer funds.
