Northtown Shopping Center celebrates grand opening

One of the major events in the history of the northern suburban area of the Twin Cities took place Thursday morning.

Northtown, a $30,000,000 shopping center that is destined to be the focal point for the entire area, was opened to the public.

The governor was there. Local mayors and civic officials were there. Peggy Lee was there. The 104-piece Spring Lake Park high school band was there.

A contrast of seasons

For Spring Lake Park, the Wednesday night win in St. Francis was its sixth in seven North Suburban games this season. For St. Francis, the loss it suffered to Spring Lake Park was its sixth in seven games and third straight by shutout.

While contrasts were stark, St. Francis, in reality played the defending Class A champion Park team tough to the finish. It just could not muster enough offense to make up for three lost fumbles and three pass interceptions.
