VFW, auxiliary sponsoring contests

The Coon Rapids VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary will again sponsor Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen competitions for local students.

According to Tami Meyers, VFW Ladies Auxiliary scholarship chairman, since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the VFW’s premier scholarship program.

High school students in grades nine-12 compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme.

This year’s theme is “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” It is open to all public, private, parochial and charter high schools along with any home schooled students in these grades, Meyers said.

Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. Local judging will be held at the Coon Rapids VFW with first place receiving $150, second place receiving $100 and third place receiving $50.

Interested students must record an original three-five minute essay on a standard cassette tape or CD, according to Meyers. “After recording the essay please replay it on an audio player other than the one used to record it to verify that the conversion/burning process was successful,” Meyers said.

The recorded essay must be clearly labeled and submitted along with the typed essay to Meyers at the Coon Rapids VFW, 1919 Coon Rapids Blvd., by Nov. 1.

The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary are also looking for students in grades six-eight to participate in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest which asks students to write a 300-400 word essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.”

Prizes and savings bonds are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. Local judging will take place at the Coon Rapids VFW with first place receiving $50, second place $30 and third place $20.

Interested students must submit their typewritten essay along with an official entry form to Meyers at the Coon Rapids VFW by Nov. 1. Official entry forms and judging criteria can be found at www.vfw.org/community/patriots-pen.
